YOUNG cattle averages surged to a record high on Tuesday night when the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) hit 458.75 cents a kilogram (carcase weight).
The past record was 451.25c/kg set at the start of February.
Restocker competition against the feedlots had been a standout early this week helping to force prices up for unfinished cattle.
Those to slaughter across many sales on Tuesday were as much as 20c/kg dearer.
Overall, the EYCI bounced nearly 9c/kg in one day and was almost 20c/kg higher than at the same time last week.
The indicator is also a huge 100c/kg higher than at the same time last year.
Inverell's market on Tuesday was nearly 30c/kg dearer, Carcoar was up 24c/kg, while Gunnedah bounced 22c/kg.
Yearling steers remain the biggest contributor to the EYCI.
