HEAVY steers attracted solid buyer demand at the Glen Innes Hereford and Crossbred Weaner Sale last Friday.
There was a yarding of 1350 cattle at the sale, including 747 weaner steers and 353 weaner heifers.
There was also a small number of yearling heifers and steers available.
Colin Say and Company stock and station agent Craig Thomas, Glen Innes, said buyers were selective with lighter steers but demand was strong for the best types of cattle.
On a cents a kilogram basis, the steers topped at 277c/kg and on a dollars a head basis, topped at $913.
They sold from 510 a head, to $913/head and made an average of $739/head.
Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) market reporter Doug Robson, said steers weighing more than 300 kilograms averaged about 262c/kg.
The heifer market was similar to what it had been during the past fortnight said Mr Thomas with selective breeds in high demand.
Heifers sold from $416/head to $701/head and made an average of $558/head.
On a cents a kilogram basis, heifers topped at 255c/kg and sold to an average of 220c/kg.
Ross and Diana Stewart, "Valeview", Wellington Vale, offered 137 Hereford and some Angus-cross weaner heifers and steers at the sale.
The Hereford steers sold to a top of 267c/kg and weighed about 308kg, selling for about $822/head.
Mrs Stewart said they were extremely happy with the results.
Mark Campion, "Benbookra'", Pinkett, won the champion pen of crossbred heifers which sold for $613.
Mr Campion sold a pen of Angus steers for $785/head and 10 Hereford steers which made $720/head and also sold some Hereford $578.
Meg Kane, "Glenpark", Ben Lomond, sold 26 Hereford and Angus weaners for $786/head.
Roger Kneipp, "Wattle Dale", Dundee, sold 50 Hereford European Union (EU) accredited steers as well as 21 Hereford heifers.
Overall, steers sold to a top of $767/head and made an average of $710/head.
On a cents per kilogram basis, Mr Kneipp said his top pen was 268c/kg.
Mr Thomas said there was a premium for EU-accredited cattle and a high demand for heavier cattle.
"Buyers were surprised by some of the weights they purchased," he said.
"The calves weighed exceptionally well."
The line-up of cattle was of high quality and Mr Thomas said agents and vendors were happy with the results of the sale.
"Quality was right on the mark," he said.
Most buyers were local although some cattle went to Queensland.
