The bidding was quick to heat up for the 22-month-old bull, offered by Peter Weiss and David Croker, Wollumbi stud, Marulan.

The bull was knocked down at $22,000 to Queensland buyers David and Kirrily Iseppi, GK stud, Dalby.

Hi Star trumped the previous record for the Red Angus National, previously at $18,000, and equalled the Australian record held by Oakleigh Park Rambo V54, sold at the Oakleigh Park Red Angus sale, Dululu, Queensland, in 2001.

Earlier in the day, Hi Star was sashed junior and grand champion bull of show.

Hi Star was the supreme Red Angus exhibit, interbreed champion bull, and a member of the successful interbreed Hordern Trophy team at this year's Sydney Royal Show.

Weighing 990 kilograms, Hi Star recorded an eye muscle area (EMA) of 129 square centimetres and a scrotal circumference of 42cm.

His rump and rib fats were measured at 21 and 15 millimetres, respectively.

Vendor David Croker said the structure, muscle pattern and sire ability of Hi Star set it apart.

"Of any breed, he is the type of bull we should be breeding in this industry," he said.

In the breakdown of results from the 15th Red Angus National Sale, 15 bulls sold at auction from 31 offered to average $6300 while eight females from 10 offered sold, to average $4500.

Almost 50 bidders registered, however they were conservative in their activity with only a 48 per cent clearance across the sale.

The second highest price recorded at the sale was paid by Terry Williams, Terra Pastoral Company, Dubbo, for the $10,000 bull Pine Villa Real Deal, offered by the Haycock family, Pine Villa stud, Yeoval.

Mr Williams, who has recently established his Terra Red Angus stud, purchased Real Deal as a foundation sire.

"I liked his volume, weight-for-age and his carcase attributes," he said.

"I also liked the outcross genetics of (his sire) Red Ter-ron Real Deal."

The 22-month-old bull, which weighed 990kg with an EMA of 131cm2, was placed as senior champion bull during the show section earlier in the day.

BST Tullatoola Winsome G52 topped the female sale, selling for $11,500 to Lindsay and Judy Murphy, Campaspe stud, Bendigo, Victoria.

Winsome, offered by Marie Schmid, BST Tullatoola, Molong, had already won the senior champion female title.

Sired by Red Six Mile Sakic 832S, Winsome was sold with a bull calf at foot by Redman 1T and artificially inseminated back to Red Six Mile Game Face, proving the cow was still producing at 15 years of age.

Mr Murphy said he was attracted to the longevity of the cow and the impressive bull calf at foot.

The reserve junior champion female, Round-Em-Up Jasmine, sold at $5000 to Rodney Stin, Molong, for David Hobbs, Round-Em-Up stud, Molong, while the junior champion female and grand champion was passed in at $4500.

To raise funds for the promotion of the Red Angus breed, Western Australia's Cowcher family, Willandra stud, offered purchasers a pick of the 2014 Willandra registered heifer calf drop at auction.

The Powe family, Goondoola stud, Cargo, purchased the opportunity for $4500.

Two lots of frozen embryos, from 11 offered, were sold at auction to a top of $500.

Volume buyers for the day included Rodney Stin, Molong, who has just established a new stud in southern Victoria.

Mr Stin took home one bull, BST Tullatoola The Night H129 for $8000, and two females, Round-Em-Up Jasmine and BST Tulla- toola Popcorn J35 for $3500.

Ellando Grazing, "Cloven Hills", Coolah, took home two Wollumbi bulls including Wollumbi Hipstar H63, a full brother to the top priced bull, for $3000 and Wollumbi Victa for $4000.

AK stud, Kangaroo Valley, took home two heifers, Raedean Red Wing H7 and GK Red Foxy Lady 05 H42, for $4500 and $4000 respectively.

The Mosely family, "Etiwanda Station", Cobar, purchased a single bull, BST Tullatoola Redman H121, for $9000 while Robert and Bernadette Close, Kurra-Wirra Pastoral Company, Hamilton, took home Hobbs Livestock Hot Shot, offered by Stuart Hobbs, Hobbs Livestock, Molong, at $7000.

The sale was conducted by Land- mark with Paul Dooley, Tam- worth, as auctioneer.
