A LIMOUSIN/Murray Grey steer won the grand champion on the hoof sash at the Canberra Royal Show on Thursday.
Kicking off four days of cattle judging, more than 70 steers competed in the open and school sections of the hoof and hook competition.
Commission buyer Bob Watts, Bob Watts Livestock, Harden, judged the steers on the hoof, before they were auctioned off and sent to be judged on the hook.
Exhibited by Williams River Cattle Company, Glen William, the grand champion steer was bred by T. and J. Morton, Westbrook.
Weighing 345 kilograms, the champion was the lightest steer in its open medium domestic class (341-440kg).
Judge Mr Watts said the steer was the complete package that stood out from the get go.
Reserve in the open section was a Limousin steer bred by Ben Toll, Sheraton Limousins, that came from the heavy domestic class wegihgin 476kg.
“It is a good length of Limousin, and I think they will both score very well," Mr Watts said.
Champion school steer on the hook was won by Brisbane Waters Secondary College, Umina Beach.
The Limousin.Angus steer was 12 months old and weighed 487kg, coming from the heavy domestic class.
It was bred by Al and Heather Kelleher, Mount River.
Reserve school steer was a Limousin/Angus/Hereford from Lachlandale Limousin stud, Forbes, exhibited by Forbes High School.
