BOTH the Red Angus breed and GK Livestock made it a hat-trick today, winning the Hordern Trophy for the third consecutive year.
Awarded to the best pair of grand champions, a cow from GK Livestock, Dalby, Queensland, and a bull from Wollumbi Red Angus, Marulan, have this year gone three in a row for Red Angus at the Sydney Royal.
And for Gavin and Kirrily Iseppi, GK Livestock, the win was even more of an achievement, having exhibited one or more of the Red Angus Hordern Trophy pair for all three wins.
This year it was with senior and grand champion Red Angus cow GK Red Olivia 26 G41, a 28-month-old cow with twin calves at foot.
The cow was accompanied by junior, grand and best exhibit champion bull, Wollumbi Hi Star H53.
Wollumbi Hi Star had also been sashed champion bull of show in the judging of the Urquhart best beef exhibit earlier in the day.
Judge David Bondfield, Palgrove Charolais, Dalveen, Qld, described the GK cow as “awesome”.
“Really angular, really easy doing – look at that udder shape, the spine…she profiles beautifully, a beautiful front, a wide hip, doing a great job two little poddy’s here, and doing it easy,” he said.
The junior bull also impressed Mr Bondfield, who said he was the type of sire that could add value to a herd by opening up different markets.
“He’s fresh, he’s young, there’s plenty left in that bull, you can just see that all you have to do here is add water and he’s just going to get better and better,” he said.
