The WALGETT community will be kicking up their heels at the Drought Buster Barbecue tomorrow night.
The event is being held at the Walgett Showground this Saturday (April 5) with country music singers and a surprise celebrity guest for entertainment. The free event kicks off at 6pm.
Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries said it was a great opportunity for the drought-stricken community to catch up and enjoy themselves.
"It's great to see that, despite the hardship faced by the people of Barwon, there are events planned that will provide support to those in need, say thanks to those who've helped and ultimately bring the community closer together."
Tamworth men Bill Caley and Neville Evans developed the idea for the social gathering over talk of the desperate situations of families and mates in the Walgett area, one of the worst-hit drought areas in NSW.
The two have brothers who farm in the area and have seen first-hand the despair and desolation that has gripped the district now for nearly two years – and, more poignantly, have also seen the wide-reaching impacts of the drought on businesses and local towns.
While social and mental problems have been reported as widespread in rural centres, the Drought Buster Barbecue will be "more about burying the negativity and promoting positivity and hope".
