FIRE stations across the State are calling on local residents to join Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) as retained or on-call firefighters.
Most stations need recruits who are available throughout the day to join the crew responding to fires and emergencies in the area.
Commander Ken Brasington, of Yenda Station which needs more recruits, said retained or on-call firefighters were a diverse group of people who balanced work and family commitments to work part-time for FRNSW.
"Retained or on-call firefighters receive a wide range of training including advanced first aid, heavy vehicle driving, and how to deal with emergencies such as fires, road accidents and hazardous material spillages," Mr Brasington said.
"They also play a valuable role in their communities by educating those around them in fire safety and prevention."
The role would suit shift workers, TAFE or university students, unemployed, or people in full or part-time employment, or mums with children at school, he said.
