Frankly I'm disappointed in how short sighted the government is being.
They are sacrificing the most fertile land in Australia for a short-term non-renewable resource that Australia won't even touch the profits.
Not only is the government ruining the long-term livelihoods of Australians (not just farmers in this area), but they are literally selling Australia off piece-by-piece to China.
What will happen in 30 years? Where will Australia be then?
Whose food will we be eating? We will be solely relying on foreign imports.
I would like them to think about OUR future as a whole nation.
The BHP mine is long-wall mining which we know will have even a bigger impact than the Shenhua mine. This mine runs directly under the Liverpool Plains meaning it will directly impact and ruin the underground water aquifers that make the Liverpool Plains so resourceful.
I think if the government were to allow this mine to go ahead we literally have no hope. I would lose all faith in Australian politics if this were to go ahead and quite seriously question whether they care about Australians at all.
For a 30-year quick buck, Australia would have foregone the biggest contributor to agricultural income - what then?
It saddens me that we are even having this conversations.
