THERE was a $2000 improvement on this year's average compared to last at the NSW Shorthorn 26th Spring Fling bull sale this afternoon.
Thirty-three of the 35 bulls offered by eight studs sold to an average of $5671 and topped at $9000 twice.
Peter and Lou Capel, Bungulla Shorthorns, Manilla, sold the two equal top price bulls to Steve and Alison Gadd, "Angle Camp", Barraba and Murray Power, "Iona", Walcha.
Mr Power purchased Bungulla Jupiter (P) PGCJ48, the Springwood Station Larrikin (P) RLW SAWD47 son which weighed in at 966 kilograms.
The bull had an eye muscle area (EMA) of 134 square centimetres and a scrotal circumference of 39 centimetres.
Mr Power, who was a first time buyer at the sale said he purchased the bull to put some softness on his Santa Gertrudis cross Charolais cows.
"I liked the softness and muscle definition of the bull," he said.
Repeat buyers Mr and Mrs Gadd purchased Bungulla Johnson (P), who was also a Springwood Station Larrikin (P) RLW SAWD47 son and weighed 920 kilograms.
The bull had an EMA of 132 square centimetres and a scrotal circumference of 38 centimetres.
Mrs Gadd said they purchased the bull because he was soft, muscley and easy doing with good fat figures.
The Gadds breed their own replacement females in their cattle herd so need a bull that produces good females which she said the Bungulla bulls do.
Bungulla stud principal, Peter Capel, said he was extremely happy with the sale result and all the vendors put in an outstanding run of bulls.
Elders stock and station agent Sam Martin, Walcha, said the Spring Fling was a good, strong sale with plenty of local competition.
"There was a well presented line of bulls showing the combination of growth and performance the Shorthorn breed is known for," he said.
