REDOAK’S Château Sour has been named champion bottled beer of the Sydney Royal Beer and Cider Show.
It comes less than two weeks after the Sydney brewer won supreme champion for the same beer at the International Beer Challenge in London where it was up against entries from more than 30 countries.
An independent brewery that specialise in craft beer, Redoak was founded by David Hollyoak who brewed his first ginger beer at just 14 and who runs the brewery with sister Janet.
The brewer’s Château Sour uses Château malts which are made by one of Belgian’s finest and oldest malting company. A Flanders red ale, it is brewed to the Flemish regional beer style.
Chief judge Neal Cameron said an extraordinary six gold medal winners were judged in the bottled beer category to find the champion.
“Each and every beer was outstanding and it proved almost impossible impossible to distinguish between the top few beers,” Mr Cameron said.
Other big winners from the beer classes included Western Australia’s Mash Brewing which won champion draught beer for its Russell brew.
An American amber ale, the Russell packs a hop punch behind a solid malt sweetness, likened to Jaffa cakes due to its chocolate and orange/citrus characteristics.
In a competition first, a champion cider trophy was awarded with The Barossa Valley Cider Company Pty Ltd crowned the inaugural winner.
Based in Nurioopta, South Australia, its Squashed Apple Cider was judged the standout in what is only the second year of judging cider as part of the show.
