YOU never lamb alone on Australia Day, Richie Benaud tells us. So given the choice of your ultimate lamb barbecue buddy, who would you choose?
In recognition of Meat and Livestock Australia’s latest marketing push, we quizzed a crop of rural identities on who they’d most like to raise a fork with this weekend.
Above: Slim Dusty was a popular choice to lamb with on Australia Day. Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton and NSW Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson both wanted to share a lamb with the legendary country music singer. “Sadly he is no longer with us, but if I could choose any celebrity to lamb with I would have Slim Dusty to play some classic country songs while enjoying Australian lamb this Australia Day,” Mr Coulton said. “He’s a great entertainer who is sadly missed,” Ms Hodgkinson said.
Above: The Grains Research and Development Corporation’s Sharon O’Keeffe says she’d love to lamb with ex-Home and Away starturned-Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth. “He’s Thor, so one of the best superhero characters ever and he’s in Hollywood these days so should come home for Australia Day and to eat some lamb to keep his strength up... and he’s good looking.”
Above: Inverell agent Bob Jamieson would cook a lamb chop for two great Australians born almost 100 years apart, Sir John Monash and Steve Waugh.“General Monash is Australia’s greatest soldier, turning the tide of World War One at Amiens, and Steve Waugh is our greatest cricket captain,” Mr Jamieson said.
Above: McAlister Saunderson Stubbs director Abb McAlister, Gundagai, would invite Noah and Dame Edna Everage to join his family for their lamb barbecue on the long weekend. “I want to personally thank Noah for getting a ewe and a ram onto his ark so they could come to this country – and I think Dame Edna is a good Aussie girl.”
Above: Paull and Scollard sheep and lamb auctioneer Tim Robinson, Albury, said he would like to lamb with former prime minister John Howard. “He had a very significant impact on the Australian economy and did a good job while he was here, which is why I’d have him at my Australia Day lamb barbecue.”
