CONDITIONS have been so good in the NSW Cowra district many seasoned prime lamb producers have already trucked their first pens of new season lambs to the saleyards.
This is as much as a month earlier than normal for many graziers and highlights just how good the oats and lucerne pastures have been, coupled with excellent genetics.
Brendan Nash, “Cranbury”, Cudal, (pictured with his agent Chris Chalker, Allan Gray and Company, Cowra) sold three- and four-month-old, second-cross new season lambs for $124 at the Cowra prime sheep sale last Friday.
Both agreed the new season suckers were in fantastic condition for this time of year.
“They have been running on lucerne and oats, and while still on the ewe these lambs have really done well this year,” Mr Nash said.
What was not as strong at Cowra last week was the market.
Agents estimated most lines of well-finished lambs were $10 to $20 a head cheaper than a fortnight ago.
