STANLEY and Gwenda Hazell run 2100 Merinos on their Grenfell property and are hoping for a good clip from their flock this season.
They will start shearing soon and Mr Hazell said while he was expecting a solid clip, he wasn’t sure what to expect with the prices.
“I’m hoping for six to seven kilograms per sheep, that’s normal and with the season they might do more this year,” he said.
He runs his Gullendah-blood medium wool Merinos across 324 hectares on “Elksley” and sells his wool to Western Wool at Parkes.
“You just don’t know with the wool market, like any market it goes up and down,” Mr Hazell said.
He was confident in the Merino industry’s future, but he thought more farmers would head down the mixed enterprise path.
“Many people here are into cropping these days,” he said.
The Hazells crop about a third of their property and this year they have sown Yiddah oats and Gregory wheat.
