PROVIDING sheep and cattle producers in Australia’s rangelands with information and insights to help them run a sustainable business will be the focus of a free webinar, to be held on July 14.
This is the second in a series of webinars being held by the Pastoral Profit program, a new joint initiative of Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) and Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), and will feature livestock profitability specialist Dr Phil Holmes, of Holmes and Co.
MLA general manager, Livestock Productivity, Dr Jane Weatherley said the webinar will cover the fundamentals of resourcing pastoral livestock businesses for the future.
“It will introduce the key criteria producers need to consider to fund the long term economic sustainability of their business, including provision for family goals, needs and aspirations, and taking into account debt considerations,” Dr Weatherley said.
AWI general manager, Research, Dr Paul Swan said woolgrowers have long developed and invested in this very effective way of extending research and development for practical outcomes.
“The Pastoral Profit network is an important part of this extension investment, as it assists producers to identify cost-effective opportunities to increase the profitability of their businesses or address specific social or environmental issues confronting them,” he said.
South Australian pastoralist Alexandra Morgan, of Outalpa Station, will join Dr Holmes during the Pastoral Profit webinar to share her experiences of making challenging business and investment decisions.
She will outline how these decisions are having a positive impact on the farm business.
Alex and her husband James run 10,000 head of dual purpose Poll Merinos in the north east pastoral zone of South Australia. She believes producers will gain real insights and valuable information from the Pastoral Profit program.
The webinar will run on Tuesday July 14 from 12:30-1:30pm EST, providing producers with a range of information on key profitability factors, including:
- The level of funding required to achieve business objectives
- How realistically the business can meet those needs and how is this determined?
- Can the business fund the needs of the operators?
- Is there a need to employ debt?
- How much debt can the business afford to service and repay?
More than 400 producers have watched the first Pastoral Profit webinar, which was held in June, but those who missed it can access it on the website: www.pastoralprofit.com.au
The Pastoral Profit program aims to provide livestock producers in pastoral zones with the latest industry information, resources and access to technical experts to build on their business skills and ultimately improve the bottom line.
