WHEN David Wisbey sold 44 steers off their mothers a fortnight ago at the Dubbo store cattle sale the draft averaged $915.
Last Friday, Mr Wisbey and his brother, Peter, of Botobolar Pastoral Company, Mudgee, returned with 17 steers aged close to 10 months from the same drop which returned higher values than the previous sale.
Nine Angus/Limousins made $960 each while the second pen of eight sold at $930 a head to return an average $946.
The brothers are sixth generation of the family who settled at Botobolar in the 19th century and are now running a cow herd of 460 breeders made up of Angus of Te Mania and Ardrossan blood, some joined to Angus and others to Limousin sires.
The Wisbeys also run a 1000 head flock mainly of first-cross ewes which are joined to White Suffolk and Poll Dorset rams for prime lamb production.
Mr Wisbey said it was a more profitable sale for vendors last week than previous sales and he was pleased he had steers ready.
Angus steers just a little older and offered by Eric Sharwood, “Nullawa”, Dubbo, had earlier topped the sale at $1060 each.
