The gallery was full at the regular Wodonga store cattle sale last Thursday when 2100 mixed quality cattle were offered for competition.
Demand continues to be strong for all types, and prices show no sign of easing.
Paull & Scoullard, Wodonga director, Stephen Paull said the prices reflected the yarding of quality cattle.
“The market was firm on current strong rates,” Mr Paull said.
“Restockers dominated demand with lot feeders buying where they could, and the few suitable pens were bought by producers.”
Mr Paull said cattle numbers are steady with producers taking advantage of current prices to ease stock numbers before the summer.
Indicative prices for steers ranged from $1100 to $1590, while lightweight steers sold from $595 to $810.
Young unjoined heifers $960 to $1260 with lighter weight heifer calves selling from $400 to $800.
Cows with calves sold from $920 to $2250 depending on condition of cows and age of calves.
An excellent line of 14 Angus steers, 15 months and weighing 520kg sold on account Michael and Denise Burke, “Bonnie Doon”, Conargo for $1590.
Noel Leitch, Ben Valley Angus, Ben Valley, Victoria sold seven Angus steers, weighing 513kg for $1520, with a second run of 13 Angus steers weighing 479kgs selling for $1530.
The Rowe family, “Wahroonga”, Lurg, Vic,sold 30 Angus steers, weighing 345kg for $1180, while the Reynolds family from Tallangatta, Vic, received $1050 for 20 Angus steers with weight of 281kgs.
Matt Martin, “Rylands”, Humula sold 12 Angus steers, Ardrossan-blood and weighing 345kg for $1120, while Wilsch Partners, “Roslyn Vale South”, Culcairn got $1100 for their pen of 15 Black Baldy steers weighing 311kgs.
An excellent line of 14 Angus heifers, unjoined and weighing 440kg offered on account Michael and Denise Burke, “Bonnie Doon”, Conargo sold for $1260.
A second line of nine Angus heifers sold by the Burke’s for $1050 with a weight of 371kg.
Cavan Station, Yass yarded a big line of quality Angus heifers, MillahMurrah and Rennylea-blood, unjoined and 15 to 16 months old.
The pen of of 50 Angus heifers weighing 351kg sold for $1100, with a pen of 18 Black Baldy heifers, weighing 378kg sold for $1110.
The feature line of the sale was the yarding of Angus cows with Aug/Sept calves, Yamba-blood and unjoined offered on account Michael and Denise Burke, “Boonie Doon”, Conargo.
Their top pen of 19 cows, two to three years with calves sold for $2250, with another pen of 23 cows, four to five years with calves selling for $2100.
With their property sold, the offering of their cattle was a complete dispersal of their herd as the Burke’s are moving to retirement.
“The cattle are in good condition and it is the highest price we have ever seen,” Mr Burke said.
They were purchased by Frank and Pam McFarland, “Bethanga Vale”, Bethanga, Vic, who are increasing stock numbers following the recent rain.
“We needed more cattle and are confident with the good prices,” Mr McFarland said.
“I think it is a fair price because we have sold our dry cows for good money and have averaged over $1000 for our weaners.”
The sale was conducted by Brian Unthank Rural, Paull & Scoullard, Peter Ruaro Livestock and Schubert Boers.
