YOUNG farmers have called on the state government to back their vision for a financial hub that would help young aggies get a start on the land.
NSW Young Farmers representatives sold their proposal to Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair as a financial advice and education service that would help youth overcome the difficulties of getting a start in the game.
The Land is seeking further details on the proposal.
The pitch came during the young farmers finance roundtable in Sydney – which itself was a key feature of the coalition’s a pre-election memorandum of understanding with NSW Farmers.
NSW Young Farmers member Tim Carroll, 30, Cudal, said while the proposal would need government funding to launch, the plan was to build the hub into an industry-led and maintained entity.
Mr Carroll said the government was considering whether or not to back the plan.
“This roundtable was a great chance for us to bring our ideas to the government, get our foot in, and now we’ve just got to keep the door open,” Mr Carroll said.
“They’ve told us they will investigate a few options. We’re hoping to see a financial commitment.”
The other NSW Young Farmers at the talks included Claire Walker of Wagga Wagga and Geoff Birchnell of Tamworth.
