THE world’s biggest hay drive is on track to leave the state’s south in early January, but more money is needed to ensure all 120 trucks get on the road.
The run, from Darlington Point to Ilfracombe, near Longreach, was set to include 130 trucks and deliver about 6000 bales, but some drivers have had to pull out due to paid work.
Burrumbuttock Hay Runners organiser Brendan Farrell said fundraising was still about $10,000 short.
“Realistically, it would cost each truck about $2500 in fuel to get up there, so even if we get $2000 in sponsorship for each truck, it’s still not going to cover all costs,” Mr Farrell said.
Lee Parish, “Carrera”, Wee Waa, has come on board, donating barley straw as well as his truck and time.
“We don’t have stock so we don’t have a need for hay,” Mr Parish said. “I was going to just donate it to Drought Angels, but I decided to take my truck instead.”
The convoy leaves on January 7. Donations can be made through Drought Angels or the Rotary Club of Sydney.
