A LONG meaty 18-month-old bull called Geronimo took a few scalps on his way to best exhibit honours in the Santa Gertrudis ring and gave his breeders, Ian and Louise MacCue, their first big win at the Sydney Royal.
The 818-kilogram bull from the MacCue family’s Tookey Creek stud and commercial beef business near Bellata in North West NSW carries the name of a famous Apache chief but the judge, Glen Waldron, a Charolais stud breeder and businessman from Meandarra, Qld, expects him to make his own big mark on the Santa Gertrudis breed in Australia.
Geronimo, by Tookey Creek Napoleon out of G.B.L. A91, won the junior bull broadribbon beating Watasanta Gangbuster 1584 entered by Neil Watson of Tamworth and then pushed aside Mr Watson’s senior champion bull, Watasanta Gee Wizz, for the grand bull prize.
Then he had to overcome the senior and grand champion female, Denngal Camelia F32, exhibited by Dennis Moxey and family, Denngal stud, Forbes for the best exhibit award.
Camelia has good form in Sydney, winning the junior female champion sash last year.
An excited Alf and Jeanette Smith, Barraba stud, Quorrobolong in the Hunter Valley won the junior female broadribbon this year with 12-month-old Barraba Destiny Bar402. The Moxey family’s Denngal Flora G27 was reserve junior female champion.
