A FEW train wrecks can be expected at Junee on Saturday, but involving chocolate rather than twisted metal.
The Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory has its sights set on creating a 20-metre edible chocolate “smash train” as a feature of the weekend’s annual Junee Rhythm ‘n’ Rail Festival – to be smashed and devoured by those who create it.
The smash-train is based on a children’s smash birthday cake concept where a shell is filled with lollies and smashed to reveal sweet fillings.
In this instance, Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory owner and local farmer Neil Druce and his staff have created a series of chocolate steam engines which will pull 57 chocolate wagons and teams will have the opportunity to decorate and fill each carriage before smashing and eating the goodies.
“Those who signed up will be able to put wheels and numbers on their carriages, and pipe chocolate decorations along the sides before filling them with a selection of white, milk and dark chocolate, along with freckles, rocky road and licorice,” said Mr Druce, pictured with Emma Turner and Vicki Murdoch.
Each wagon will be made from about 470 grams of chocolate and will be filled with about 800g of licorice and chocolate.
It’s taken staff three weeks to create all the engines and wagons needed for the event.
The Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory holds a world record for the longest licorice strap at 244 metres which was achieved in 2008, and the longest rocky road at 62.2m – a record notched up in 2011.
