THEY blew 17 tyres along the way, but the Burrumbuttock hay runners made it to Ilfracombe in one piece.
After a 1860-kilometre journey, more than 100 weary drivers spent the weekend distributing 4500 barrels of hay to almost 300 properties.
Organiser Brendan Farrell said the severity of the drought meant the hay would provide reprieve for a fortnight at the most.
“It’s just that dry here, I can’t believe it,” he said.
“The morale of the people here is amazing.
“To get out of bed every day and look at this barren land of nothing, and try and see stock on it, I take my hat off to them.
“The recognition and the response from farmers getting the hay makes it worthwhile.”
Mr Farrell spent Sunday finishing up and said the need for more hay runs into the future was clear.
“This afternoon we’ll start relaxing and getting ready for the trip back,” he said.
“I dare say, we have to keep going because these people are in a lot of trouble.”
