Tim Durnan, “Weeroona”, Narrandera, said his family would continue to produce quality first-cross ewes because they were the basis of the prime lamb industry.
“They are tried and proven during many generations,” Mr Durnan said.
“The best lines of even suckers at sales by terminal sires are nearly always out of first-cross ewes.”
The annual draft of young ewes presented by the Durnan family, obviously are meeting the market with the top draft of this years offering of 800 ewes sold for $192.
Last year, their top pen sold for $180.
Mr Durnan said he also retains a proportion of each drop to join the White Suffolk sires.
“The sale of the suckers straight of their dams spreads our cash flow, with a minimum of work,” he said.
