YOUNG scientist James Hunt was the 2016 GRDC Southern Region Seed of Light award recipient at the grains industry update in Adelaide this week, acknowledging his outstanding efforts in the extension of grains research outcomes.
GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair Keith Pengilley said Dr Hunt had already left an indelible mark on Australian grains research, particularly in the area of improved and innovative farming systems.
A specialist in crop agronomy and physiology, Dr Hunt is a senior lecturer at La Trobe University, Vic – after working as a research scientist at CSIRO for the past seven years.
A joint investment of $50 million to SA grains research by the state government and the GRDC was also announced at the conference, attended by a record 370 advisors and farmers.
SARDI will commit staff, equipment and resources to the value of $25m to match a GRDC $25m cash investment. The co-investment also includes six new regional agronomy positions in SA.
