The reputation of Riverina-bred ewes was to the fore at the regular summer sheep sale held at Urana by JM Smith and Co, Urana and Elders, Jerilderie, when over 10,000 sheep met strong competition.
Top priced pen of 467 Merino ewes, 2013 drop, One Oak blood, September shorn and scanned in-lamb to Poll Dorset rams sold by Brian Mansell, manager, “Yarrabee Park”, Morundah for $198.
A line of 105 White Suffolk/Merino ewes, 2013 drop, and scanned with twins to White Suffolk rams sold for $200.
Selling agent, Denis Smith said there was keen inquiry for quality Merino ewes, and especially if they were scanned in-lamb.
Mr Smith said prices were better than any sheep sale he has been to during the past few months.
“It was interesting to see Merino ewes joined to Merino rams make more than Merino ewes joined to Poll Dorsets,” he said.
“I haven’t seen that happen before.”
