AS THE season dries off in the Wooragee district in Victoria, producers have been forced to sell their current calf drop earlier than normal.
Robin Warner, Danetree Herefords, would normally sell his Hereford steers much later in the year, but instead turned some of them off at 10 months to cope with the dry start to autumn.
“It was a great sale,” Mr Warner said, referring to the Wodonga sale last Thursday.
“We had a dry spring, so the steers are about 10 kilograms lighter than last year’s steers, but we are selling them because of the dry autumn we are now going through."
His steers tipped the scales at an average of just under 340kg and sold for a healthy $1220 a head.
Indicative prices at the sale included young steers from $795 to $1260, with most selling for more than $1000, and older steers making from $990 to $1450.
