RISING roo numbers aren’t limited to notorious hotspots in the state’s south, with farmers across the North West also hopping mad over the population boom.
Lucy Shorter, “Boola”, Burren Junction, runs a podiatry business in Moree and often travels local highways, such as the Mungindi road, for appointments.
Lately, she said she had come close to hitting several roos during most car trips.
“It’s not a matter of if you’ll hit one, it’s a matter of when,” Mrs Shorter said.
She said the amount of kangaroos on her property was also making her nervous about planting pasture for stock feed this year.
Meanwhile, other producers in the Central West, such as John Seaman, "Brooklyn", Perthville, said the damage being done to farm fences was a threat to biosecurity.
"Biosecurity runs a pretty poor second to a mob of kangaroos," the Merino farmer said.
"It would be nice to think you could just herd them off to another area.
“But then you are just creating a problem for someone else.”
