THE future of the Casino saleyards will be laid bare for members of the public next week.
The Richmond Valley Council previously flagged its intention to investigate privatising the yards, despite securing a federal grant to upgrade the aging facility. That money is currently invested awaiting a decision on the saleyard’s future.
There will be other options on the table at the information session held Monday May 9, 5.30pm at the Casino community centre across from the council chambers.
President of the Casino Auctioneers’ Association Matthew McCormack said the mood of the people was well and truly against any privatision of the public yards.
“The point of this meeting will be to feel the pulse of those in charge,” he said. “Recently they have all gone quiet.”
Richmond Valley Mayor Ernie Bennett said ongoing investment in the saleyard’s infrastructure was a must if Casino wanted to continue to lead the way selling prime cattle.
Cr Bennett said local farmers, transport companies and selling agents would benefit from an improved facility, as well as local businesses.
