RECENT approval of larger load sizes for the Moree to Narrabri rail is a welcome advance says grain producer and Grower Co member, Charles Brett, “Kirribilli”, Bullarah.
Mr Brett was a founding member of Grower Co, a Moree based cooperative aiming to lower freight costs by consolidating loads to offer hauliers larger scale.
Mr Brett said Moree had operated at a disadvantage to other areas closer to Newcastle port, where the rail line already allowed for heavier wagons.
ARTC today revealed it would trial increased weight restrictions on the Moree rail link (see article page right).
Increasing the rail weight allowance into Moree would allow northern growers to move grain more efficiently and, in turn, expand their marketing options.
“They can put more payload on the wagon, making it more efficient,” Mr Brett said.
“When you get more efficiency, you get a cheaper price.”
“It’s a great thing for the industry.”
