RAIN always draws a large crowd to the Dubbo store cattle sale and last Friday was no exception with a rain reduced yarding of 1800 head resulting in PTIC cows topping at $1560 and steers selling to $1200.
Sales went mainly to local buyers with some heading to Coonamble, Forbes and Southern Tablelands districts.
Light weaner steers sold from $440 to $760 while medium weights of 200 to 280 kilograms made from $760 to $1060. Light weaner heifers ranged from $400 to $670 while medium weights sold at $640 to $1020.
Yearling steers made from $640 $1200 to average $890 while one pen of yearling heifers made $890.
Some 200 PTIC cows sold from $565 to $1560 to average $1040. Cows with calves under two months from $780 to $1290, averaged $987 while those with calves of two to four months made $540 to $1200 to average $848.
Plasto and Company’s Ross Plasto, Wellington, said the market was firm and smaller cattle were dear enough.
“It was a pretty solid sale and a sound result for everybody,” he said.
Paul Alchin of Christie and Hood, Gilgandra, said there was a good crowd and “everything” sold well and made its value.
“But I don’t think it was off the air and with the promise of more rain I don’t think it made prices dearer,” he said.
“It was a pretty handy market.”
Mudgee’s Merrendee Station manager Vince Forgione presented 116 mixed-sex weaners, six to eight months, with 52 Charolais and Charolais/Droughtmaster heifers making $740 to $1000 to average $892 and 64 steers from $850 to $1105 to average $965.
Dick Norris, manager “Omeo”, Goolma, sold 22 Angus steers, 10 to 11 months weighing from 280 to 330 kilograms sell to $1200 and average $1138
Hope Royal, Twelve Mile, Wellington, sold 31 Angus-cross weaner steers from $730 to $855 to average $807 and heifers $580 to $780 to average $654.
Thompson family’s Gwandoban Partnership, Coolah, sold 20 PTIC Angus cows, joined to Angus for July calving, predominantly five year-old at $1500 each. Howard Wye, “Rocky”, Dubbo, bought 10 Angus-cross weaner steers weighing close to 250kg for $845.
