PLENTY of perseverance has paid off for Jack Murray, finally catching a wild dog after a six-week pursuit.
The sheep breeder from “Lyndon”, Walgett, runs 3000 medium wool Merinos.
Mr Murray said this dog has been on his radar for about 12 months. The dog seemed to be doing a circuit of a number of properties, killing around 60 sheep.
“He attacks them across the kidneys,” he said.
A neighbour even found an emu that had been pulled down and killed.
Mr Murray said he had massive support from Walgett Local Land Services (LLS), which helped with baiting, trapping and setting up cameras. He said cameras helped track the dog, and he set four traps along a fenceline.
He said after six weeks of setting traps, he was feeling despondent. But a little change made the difference.
“I put some essence of aniseed on a stick near the trap,” he said. “He was very strong, I reckon about three to four years old and 22 kilograms. He was a very fit-looking dog.”
DNA testing will be carried out on the dog.
