AN embryo transfer son of stud sire T732 has sired Towalba stud’s second winning ram in three years of the Elders Premier Hogget competition during the 2016 Midstate Merino field day at Dubbo on Tuesday.
Bred and exhibited by the Kopp family, Peak Hill, the Towalba hogget ram is from a T339 green tag ewe and weighed 114 kilograms while growing 19.5 micron wool.
For the second year Midstate members displayed rams reserved for the spring sale season on the Dubbo Western Institute of TAFE rural centre campus and this year 15 exhibited rams in the line-up for judge, Henry Armstrong, Pemcaw stud, Dunedoo.
Mr Armstrong said he really liked the style of Towalba’s winner.
“He’s a pretty correct ram with a volume of wool.
“There were wider rams in the line-up with possibly softer wool, but I think a strong wool ram like this with a good underneath was the definite winner.”
Second prize went to a Weealla stud ram bred by the McBurnie family, Balladoran, of which the judge said carried “lovely” white wool, a good length of body and good underbelly of wool.
Third prize was awarded to Langdene stud of the Cox family, Dunedoo, which Mr Armstrong said was similar in type to the runner-up.
Australian Wool Innovation’s general manager of research, Paul Swan, conducted several workshops throughout the day on world wool demographics and the Australian wool market position plus Merinos to market and the benefits of scanning.
