NSW Farmers conference delegates pounced while Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair was in the room to introduce an urgency motion driving home dissatisfaction with proposed land clearing reforms.
NSW Farmers withdrew its support for the draft laws last month pending significant amendments “from start to finish.”
The urgency motion, introduced after Mr Blair had delivered the keynote address to conference, called for government to scrap the proposed cap on clearing codes that would restrict the rate and scale of approved clearing.
Concerns also included powers of entry and investigation of the eventual compliance agency, as well as the unavailability of key regulatory maps until after the legislation has passed through parliament.
The motion received unanimous support from delegates.
Meanwhile a new opponent has risen to try and convince Mike Baird to scrap the reforms.
Eight NSW farming identities have pledged support to the Farming Future alliance, including Landcare Australia sustainable farming ambassador Charlie Arnott, 2015 Australian Young Farmer of the Year Annika Molesworth, Inverell organic farmer and Sydney Harbour Bridge horse-rider Glenn Morris, and former NSW Young Farmers chair Josh Gilbert, who quit the organisation this year over and ideological disagreement to the reforms.
The group has called for ‘significant changes’ to the proposed legislation – all environmentally focused – including improved conservation targets, more funding for private land conservation and stewardship, more protection for soil and water quality, and a new environmental peer support program focused on education.
