A SALE high of $30,000 was achieved at the 55th Yalgoo Herefords and Poll Herefords sale at “Yalgoo”, Walcha on Monday.
Forty four of 48 bulls offered by the Nivison family sold for a clearance of 92 per cent and average of $7251.
Polled bull Yalgoo Knave K047 topped the sale, selling to Matthew and Debbie Kelley, Warragundi Herefords, “Warragundi West”, Currabubula. Knave, a 23-month-old son of Yalgoo Balboa H251 and Yalgoo Melody F142, weighed 830 kilograms, had a scrotal circumference of 44.5 centimetres, and estimated breeding values (EBVs) of +35, +62 and +93 for 200-, 400- and 600-day weight.
Mr Kelley is a repeat Yalgoo client, purchasing last year’s sale topper, Yalgoo Jet J157, for $32,000. He said the bull would be used in the stud herd.
“I saw him out in the paddock and I loved his natural balance – he’s a very athletic animal.”
Brian Burgess, Ravensdale Poll Herefords, Holbrook, paid $20,000 for a half share in their choice of Yalgoo yearling bulls.
Jim Nivison, “Ohio North”, Walcha, bought Yalgoo Brick K133, a 22-month-old by NJW 73S W18 Hometown 10Y from Yalgoo Beauty B040, for $11,000. Brick weighed 764kg, measured 46cm in the scrotum, and had EBVs of +4.2 for birthweight and +38, +61 and +91 for 200-, 400- and 600-day weight.
Yalgoo Klaxon K103, by TH 71U 719T Mr Hereford 11X from Yalgoo Bette D240, reached $10,000, selling to Simon Croft, “Milparinka”, Guyra. The 22-month-old bull was the heaviest Yalgoo bull in the sale, weighing 906kg. He measured 42.5cm in the scrotum and had EBVs of +3.8 for birthweight, and +36, +54 and +77 for 200-, 400- and 600-day weight.
The second bull to reach $10,000 was Yalgoo Karoo K177, bought by Andrew and Wainie Robertson, “Rosedale”, Walcha. Karoo was a 22-month-old son of Wirruna Echuca E99 and Yalgoo Bonnie D090, weighing 804kg. He had a scrotal circumference of 41cm and EBVs of +4.3 for birthweight, +40, +68 and +101 for 200-, 400- and 600-day weight, and +63 for carcase weight.
Mr Nivison was the biggest volume buyer, purchasing seven bulls for a top of $11,000 and average of $7714. Will Tetley, Winterthur Pty Ltd, “Bonny Rigg”, Quirindi, bought five bulls topping at $9000 and averaging $7400 and Woodbrook Vineyard, Gulgong, bought five bulls for a top of $8000 and average of $5600. Repeat client Max Mawhinney, "Kentucky Blue", Walcha, bought four bulls topping at $6000 and averaging $4000.
The sale also included 11 bulls from Ivy Bank Poll Herefords, with four selling for a top of $7000.
The sale was conducted by Elders Walcha, with Andy McGeoch taking bids.
