“Bio-security is a big thing for us,” Peter Parkman said.
“We want to be careful about introducing diseases to our property, and bringing sheep in was always going to be a problem.”
Rams are the only sheep bought onto the place, and the Parkman brothers have been purchasing Retallack Border Leicesters because they “stand up with good feet and have less structural issues.” according to Jim Parkman.
“We usually buy rams which are a twin or triplet,” he said.
“And we buy from the better end of the flock offering: we are prepared to meet the current market but do have a budget.”
Mr Parkman said they select the better rams because of the increased genetic gain imparted to their flock.
“We are doing that for our genetic benefit and because we have a ready sale for our surplus first-cross ewes.
“Knowing the rams are top quality, we have confidence in their ability to ‘breed on’, and we know what they are capable of producing.”
