Cattle selling complex at Yass acclaimed

Local livestock producer, Andrew Ledger, The Mullion Angus, Yass, said the South Eastern Livestock Exchange (SELX) was a boon for the Southern Tablelands.

“I think it is a terrific asset for our area,” Mr Ledger said.

“I used to sell cattle at Carcoar but this is more convenient.

“It is going to be fantastic for the district and for producers as it is close to our doorstep.”

Mr Ledger penned 21 Angus heifers weighing 307 kilograms for the opening sale and sold them for $1164.

He also purchased one of the donated heifers for $2500, which was auctioned in the opening pen in support of Country Education Foundation of Australia.

“I wanted to support the foundation because of the tremendous good it does in supporting the education of country children who are often living in isolated areas,” Mr Ledger said.

Gerrard and Partners, Young, livestock agent John Gerrard was complimentary about the design and accessibility of the new cattle selling complex.

“I thought the cattle yards are well designed, with ease of movement for stock and was obvious the cattle will be able to be worked through them,” Mr Gerrard said.

“The welfare of the stock has been considered with soft floors while they are penned, and I think SELX will only grow as a market for cattle.”

After the charity pen was sold, 2369 cattle were sold at the inaugural prime cattle sale, through the 12 agents with a pleasing crowd of buyers present, representing all major operators. 

David Monk, from Meat and Livestock Australia, reported live from the opening. “Young cattle sold to very solid competition,” he said.

SELX saleyard manager, Rod Bourlet said the end result was a great way to kick off the first sales at SELX.

“We experienced a few technical hiccups, but nothing that can’t be sorted after a thorough review with staff. Overall, I’m really happy with how everything operated, it is all positive,” he said.
