Doug and Susie Barnett of Baroma Downs Braford hit a $12,000 high at their annual bull and female sale on Monday.
The Croppa Creek based stud along with invited guest vendors Donrinda and Double C Brafords, Jim, Ann, Craig and Caroline Chad, Dubbo, and Southern Cross Brafords, Ray and Sharon Bowen, Yeovil, cleared 11 of the 27 bulls offered to top at $12,000 and average $5545 and sold 19 of the 21 females to average $1260.
In the bulls Baroma Downs sold six from 15 bulls to top at $12,000 and average $5252 and Donrinda sold five from seven bulls to top at $10,000 and average $5900; whilst Southern Cross sold two from four females for $1500 each and Baroma sold all of their 17 females.
Baroma Downs 362 Parish, a poll 31 month-old bull weighing 816 kilograms, took the top honours selling to long time stud supporter, Anne Bullen, “Brenowen”, Narrabri.
Scanning a P8 of 14 millimetres, a rib of 9mm, an eye muscle area (EMA) of 126cm2 , an intramuscular fat (IMF) of 5.7 per cent, 40 centimetres in the scrotum and a sperm count of 70pc, the Carinya Nicholas son out of a home bred female was a “good looking bull and just what she was looking for”.
With a commercial pure Braford herd that joins near 60 females annually, Mrs Bullen was looking for an outcross bloodline.
“I needed some new blood but first and foremost they have to be poll and have a good temperament and that’s exactly why I’ve been buying from Baroma since 1984,” Mrs Bullen said.
Donrinda K024 Kellaway was the second to hit double figures selling to Warren and Sue Wilson, “Redbank”, Mitchell, Queensland, for $10,000.
The 27 month-old bull weighed 896kg and scanned 15mm on the P8, 10mm for the rib, an EMA of 129cm2 , 4.8pc for IMF, a sperm count of 80pc and 44cm in the scrotal.
Sired by Donrinda G075 Mr Cricket and out of a Granvelle Seymour female, the bull was one of four purchases Wilson Grazing made including a Baroma Downs bull for $4000 and two heifers for $1400 each.
Volume buyer was Glen Neill, “Wilgalong”, Hermidale, who secured four bulls to average $3500. Mr Neill, who has been breeding Brafords for 40 years, was looking for bulls with a little more Brahman content and good weight for age.
The commercial producer joins around 550 Braford females annually to supply a neighbouring feedlot.
Sale host, Doug Barnett, Baroma Downs was pleased with the support from loyal clientele. “We had some strong interest in our females so for the first time we offered a select offering to give the sale a new dynamic,” Mr Barnett said.
