A PRIMARY school education unit about the value of food production and the fertile Liverpool Plains district is available for the first time.
Targeted at year 6 students, The Food Bowl Connection unit was spearheaded by Liverpool Plains resident Robbie van Hemert and written by education consultant Angela Colliver.
“Given the Liverpool Plains feeds so many people, and that food is essential for our survival, we need to protect it,” Ms van Hemert said.
“The Food Bowl Connection initiative is built around our belief that connecting with a place is fundamental caring for it.”
The unit was developed with Year 6 Quirindi Primary School students and focuses on the social, cultural and political issues surrounding food security and including geological history, crop production and botanical as well as landscape imagery.
The unit is endorsed by the Primary Industries Education Foundation Australia, a national not for profit organisation supported by government and industry funds to promote education on the sector in schools.
The Food Bowl Connection unit includes a competition for students to market Liverpool Plains produce.
The Australian Junior Food Brand Award competition will be judged by foodie identities Josephine Perry and Christine Manfield, National Farmers Federation president Fiona Simson, branding guru Stephen Harnwell Jones ann chief executive of the Primary Industries Education Foundation Ben Stockwin.
