VALUES, like demand, jumped for sound, functional calf getters at the annual Talooby Angus stud bull sale, Bylong, when two bulls topped at $16,000 to the same buyer and 60 from 65 sold at auction for a whopping $7425, an increase on last year of $1717.
Conducted by Jill and Peter Grieve, the Talooby herd is bred for the environment and bulls were keenly sought after on the day with 38 breeders buying one up to six bulls each.
Thirteen bulls sold at $10,000 and above while 40 two-year-olds averaged $7350 and 20 yearlings averaged $7750.
Four Red Angus bulls topped at $8500 and averaged $6125 with the top money bull being purchased by Moyallen Pastoral Company, “Moyallen”, Morven, Queensland, with a black bull at $10,000.
Liking Talooby bulls to sire replacement females within the “Buri West” Angus herd of 300 breeders at Walcha, Joe Berry has returned after first buying bulls in 2008.
He buys bulls from another source to breed steers, but female breeding is what he seeks from Talooby bulls.
This year he bought two bulls, a two year-old and a yearling, paying $16,000 equal top money for each.
The first a 25 month-old Talooby Kiwi K94 (AI) by New Zealand sire Matauri Reality 839 weighing 814 kilograms with a daily weight gain of 1.13kg. His dam is from the Talent family by Outwest NF Zorba.
The second at 17 months was Talooby Leopold L2 by Wattletop Future Direction 4268 and from a Millah Murrah Neutron sired Zodiac family dam. This youngster weighed 830kg with a daily weight gain of 1.50kg.
Mr Berry’s manager, Dean Wood said weaners produced for either local trade or the EU sell to feedlots and fatteners through AuctionsPlus.
Second top of $14,000 was paid by Pheasant Creek Brangus, “Thendra”, Wowan, Queensland, for the 918kg son of Talooby Cracker.
Returning client Rob Wythes, “Inverary”, Narromine, paid $13,000 for a yearling son of the Wattletop sire weighing 730kg for his herd which has changed from Murray Greys.
Two bulls sold at $12,000 with the first, Talooby Krypton K51 by Talooby Garnet, weighing 806kg going to local district breeders Timnath Pty Lts, “Budden”, Bylong.
The Spicer family, “Wangabutta”, Coonabarabran, secured six bulls to average $7583 topping at $11,000 for a son of Talooby Galaxy.
The sale was conducted by Elders Mudgee and McDonald Lawson, Mudgee, with Paul Dooley, Tamworth, guest auctioneer.
