AUSTRALIA’S longest running private on-property bull sale, the Greenup family’s Rosevale Santa Gertrudis sale, Rosevale, Jandowae, Queensland, celebrated 60 years of hosting annual fixtures by turning over $1,337,500 in seed stock sales on Tuesday.
Stud co-principal Grahame Greenup said the two biggest changes for the Santa Gertrudis breed over the past 60 years was the introduction of poll genetics and their improvements in fertility.
A big crowd was on hand to help celebrate their milestone and bolstered demand on the 150 head selling for a $8917 average which included a pair of females at $4250 each.
The analysis of the sale revealed 88 classified S bulls averaged $10,642 and 60 out of 63 herd bulls averaged $6542 representing a clearance rate of 98 per cent.
The $40,000 top selling bull, Rosevale Downpour L238, was bought by Cam and Fiona Russell and family, Swan Hill Cattle Company, Blackall, QLD. Mr Russell described the 760 kilogram, 23-month-old son of Wightfields Downpour G21 (P) as ‘the best bull in the yard’ in terms of his figures, scrotal development, great temperament and doing ability.
“He (Rosevale Downpour L238) has the ideal skin/coat type and a real sire’s outlook,” Mr Russell said.
Underbidders on the top seller was John and Vicki Howard, Burleigh Estates, Mountain View, Biloela, QLD, who did not go home empty handed after buying three bulls for a $12,667 average which included a well-muscled, easy doing son of Wigthfields Crackerjack C75 in Rosevale Leprechaun L458 (P) for $20,000.
The first bull into the ring, Rosevale Lomax L24 (P), another performance-packed son of Wightfields Downpour with an early maturity muscle pattern was bought by Craig Leggett, S. Kidman and Co Ltd, Rockybank Station, Roma, QLD, for the $30,000 second highest money.
Colby Ede, Landmark, Toowoomba was on the phone representing the Michelmore Family, Fort Cooper, Nebo and bid the $28,000 third highest money for Rosevale Ludlow, a growthy, bullock breeding Downpour G21 son with exceptional eye muscle area figure of plus 7.5.
Regular buyers Richard and Robyn Simmons, Simmons Cattle Company, Avon Downs, Clermont were again operating on the quality end after buying 14 herd improvers for a $10,250 average which included a $16,000 bid to secure, Rosevale Empire L128, a polled, easy doing son of proven sire in Rosevale Empire E464.
Long-term buyers, Paul and Tim Kirkwood, Disney, Clermont, QLD, selected eight, well-muscled, clean sheathed bulls for a $7437 average.
TVF Pastoral Company representatives Andrew Delforce, Minnie Downs, Tambo, QLD, bought a quality pair at $9000. The progeny of successful sire Wightfields Downpour G21 (P) was on top of the leader board after 23 of his sons averaging $11,826 which included the $40,000 top priced bull and the $18,000 top herd bull money also bought by the Mickelmore Family.
The Greenup’s other Wightfields sire, Crackerjack C75 (PS) also performed creditably with nine sons averaging $11,777 and both Rosevale home bred sires, Rosevale Atomic F120 (P), represented by 10 sons which averaged $11,350 and Rosevale Empire E464 with 13 sons averaging a hefty $11,346 were also popular with buyers.
