The first day of the three-day 2016 Rabobank Dubbo Merino National featured the March-shorn ram and ewe class judging and junior championships on August 23.

Fine/medium wool rams from Roseville Park stud, Dubbo, won the Elders pen of three sale rams at the 2016 Rabobank National Dubbo Merino Sheep Show and Sale. The stud was also placed second in the competition. Scott Thrift, Elders, Dubbo, is pictured with the winning rams are stud principal Matthew Coddington holding “Lot 1”, the 19 micron 2015 Midstate Hogget ram champion; John Roberts holds Lot 7, a 17.6 micron ram and Bevan Jolly holds the 18 micron Lot 4.

Warick Kopp, Towalba stud, Peak Hill, holds his champion strong wool sale ram while Jennifer Jones, Darriwell stud, Trundle, sashes. The ram later sold for $8000 to Crouch Brothers, “Milby”, Condobolin and Jon L’Estrange, “Inglewood”, Condobolin.

Grant Judd, Dubbo, holds Roseville Park stud’s 18 micron champion medium wool sale ram while sashed by steward, Matthew Bell, Raby stud, Warren.

Alfoxton stud, Armidale, exhibited reserve champion medium wool sale ram.

Garry Cox, Langdene stud, Dunedoo, holds his grand champion sale ram, the champion fine/medium wool champion, being sashed by Vanessa Binks, The Land livestock writer, Orange.

Willandra stud, Jerilderie, exhibited the champion March shorn Merino pair which are fine/medium wool ET brother and sister Poll Merinos from the $12,000 One Oak No 2 ewe purchased at his brother’s dispersal. Three of the judges, Danny Picker, Hillcreston Park, Bigga, super/fine Poll Merinos; Joe van Eyk, Shalimar Park, Walcha, superfine and fine wools Merinos; and Paul Meyer, Mulloorie stud, Brinkworth, South Australia, medium/strong wool Poll Merinos.

There were so many Merino wethers the split the sections to fine wool and strong wool. Pictured is co-judge, Tony Inder, Allendale stud, Wellington, giving each animal his critical eye appraisal.

Wool expertise was required from Australian Wool Network’s Queensland manager Stephen Maunder, St George, and northern NSW manager Harold Manttan, Uralla, who judged 120 fleeces entered in 21 classes at the 2016 AWN National Fleece Competition.

Robert Sullivan, Greenfields Poll stud, Hallett, South Australia, holds his champion March shorn strong wool ram, sashed by the judge Paul Meyer, Mulloorie Poll stud, Brinkworth, SA.

Haddon Rig stud, Warren, rejoined the broad ribbon winning circles with this ram awarded champion March shorn strong wool Merino ram and reserve grand champion Merino ram.

For the second consecutive year Poll Boonoke stud, Deniliquin, has won the coveted champion NSW junior March shorn award with its champion March shorn medium wool Poll Merino ram. For the second consecutive year the Rayner family’s Grathlyn stud, Hargraves has been awarded the supreme fleece of the Australian Wool Network (AWN) Open Fleece Show. This year the award went to Grathlyn’s superfine ram fleece.
