Normanhurst Border Leicester stud at Boorowa, recorded a total clearance at their 12th annual on-property sale, which fetched a top price of $2500.
Eighty rams went under the hammer, clearing all lots, topping $2500 for a $1465 sale average.
The top ram was sold to Tony and Natalie Hewitt, Galmora Border Leicesters, Grabben Gullen.
It weighed 112 kilograms and carried a 42 millimetre eye muscle depth (EMD).
Volume buyers on the day were repeat clients, John, Robert and Patrick Kelly, Wiregrass Pastoral Company, “Nilgari”, Boorowa.
They snapped up 12 rams, topping $1700, for a $1408 average.
Robert Kelly said for a consecutive 10 year period, they select Normanhurst Border Leicester rams to go over their 1700 Merino ewe flock.
“We keep returning because they work very well within our operation – they put out a consistent and quality product so we are definitely happy with the genetics,” he said.
“We sell the lambs off at about eight months-old, so we look for a good body and appropriate balance when we select the rams.”
The line of rams will be put to work in December.
The second highest price was $2100 and was sold to R.J Hain, “Gunyah”, Cooma, through Elders, Cooma.
The twin ram weighed 85kg and carried a 41mm EMD.
Normanhurst Border Leicester stud, co-principal, Tom Corkhill, said the appearance of both new faces and return buyers was a positive sign for the stud going forward.
“We have definitely focused on increasing carcase qualities in the breeding program and aiming to get more meat on the rams – this year’s line up showed the length of body coming through which was pleasing,” Mr Corkhill said.
“In particular the top ram showed good eye muscle depth and length of body, he’s an even, well rounded ram, with a sirey head.
“It’s also great to hear the return volume buyers are making top prices with their first- cross sales, this means they are happy with their progeny; which is what it is all about.”
Also taking home a line of rams were Veolia, Tarago, through Elders, Goulburn, who snapped up 10, topping $1500, for $1260 average.
Binda Holdings, Binda, through Elders, Crookwell, also joined in on the bidding action, taking home seven rams, topping $2000, for an $1800 average.
The sale was conducted by auctioneers’, Steve Ridley, Elders, Goulburn and Rick Power, Landmark, stud stock specialist, Boorowa.
