JON and Chris Culross and their three daughters made the move to Green Pigeon Valley near Kyogle eight years ago.
They acquired 5700 trees (mostly Hass) on the 114ha farm and have not looked back since. For Jon, a third generation rice and sheep farmer from Moulamein in the Riverina it was a huge leap of faith to become an avocado farmer.
“We have been very lucky to live here,” Jon said.
“Our children have loved growing up surrounded by so much natural beauty and avocados have been a very rewarding crop to grow.
“We have watched avocados become a superfood in recent years with demand mostly outstripping supply- a great position for a producer to be in.”
Expressions of Interest close on November 3.
The orchard is framed by the World Heritage listed Border Ranges National Park and the surrounding mountains create a sheltered microclimate perfect for avocado growing. Abundant rainfall combined with deep well-drained soils have allowed Jon and Chris to take yields and quality to a new level, this year achieving over 90 per cent premium fruit for the bulk of the harvest.
“We have put a lot of care into our nutrition and pest and disease control and couldn’t be happier with the results,” Jon said.
Green Pigeon Avocados is a productive farm in a thriving industry, located in the stunning Northern Rivers region. There is a spacious five bedroom home with a self-contained studio. Fawcetts Creek provides stunning secluded swimming holes on a warm day as well as a reliable irrigation source. The whole farm is drained to a central 40ML dam, further drought proofing the property.
“We have a full packing and marketing service in place with an external contractor so we are free to concentrate on growing the best avocados we can,” Jon said.
“This farm has allowed us to achieve all our business goals in just eight years and we are ready to move on. The next owners can be confident this is a great business with a very strong future.”
