SOME of the country’s best stock horse genetics will be on offer when 16 ridden horses and two broodmares are offered at the annual Australian Stock Horse Society (ASHS) approved Tocal College horse sale on November 6.
Tocal horse lecturer Warwick Lawrence said final preparations had begun for the annual sale, which features horses used in the agricultural college’s hands-on horse training program.
All horses in the sale are three years old and are registered with the Australian Stock Horse Society.
“They’ve all been through the Tocal program, so they were weaned by students then turned out before being broken in August last year and through the Tocal challenge by the end of the year,” Mr Lawrence said.
”They then come back in by February to help teach the new students how to ride and train a horse.
“The students do all the work, from breaking to preparing them for the sale.”
This year’s Tocal sale won’t include any horses from outside vendors, but it does feature some young horses not bred at the college.
“A few years ago we had some mares in our breeding program who didn't foal so we had to buy some yearlings straight off their mothers from Troy Palmer, so we’ve got five horses by Binnia Impressive Destiny,” Mr Lawrence said.
“We're really happy with them, as well as the Tocal horses that were bred here by Peelvale Maestro.”
Mr Lawrence said all sale horses had a good foundation for any discipline.
“By the time they get to the auction, they’re ready for competition,” he said.
“There are horses here for campdrafting, polocrosse, pony club and team penning, as well as the show ring.
“Last year a buyer ended up in the futurity at the ASH nationals in Tamworth.
“We even get people who come from Sydney who just want a quiet horse they might ride once a month.”
A parade will be held at 10am prior to the 1pm auction, but buyers can view the horses online and inspect and ride the horses prior to the sale. Pictured are sale horses Binnia Nic Nac, Tocal Notes and Lyrics, Tocal Northern Gem and Tocal Next Question.
