One-hundred and fifty Merino and Poll Merino rams sold to a top of $8000 and $1983 average at the Bogo Merinos on-property sale yesterday at "Ravenswood", Boambolo, via Yass.
A large contingent of volume buyers competed against each other to secure 150 of the 160 rams offered at auction with more rams selling after the fall of the final hammer.
The top-price ram was sold to return client Keith Butt, “Narooma”, Young, for $8000.
A Poll Merino, the September 2014-drop ram weighed 102.5 kilograms and possessed fleece measurements of 17.8-micron fibre diametre, 2.9 standard deviation (SD), 16.3 coefficient of variation (CF) and 99.5 comfort factor (CF).
He was described by Bogo stud manager Mal Peake as an outstanding stud sire project, structurally correct with great bone and doing ability.
Mr Butt said he looks for top sires to introduce into his Merino operation to breeds his own rams.
The second highest price ram, another Poll Merino, was purchased by Craig Wilson of Craig Wilson and Associates, Wagga Wagga, on behalf of Shaun Beasley, Emu Park, Bairnsdale, Victoria.
Volume buyers were Anna and John Hyles, “Boorooma”, who secured 18 rams for their 20,000 head Merino operation at Tharwa.
Cavan station general manager, Matt Crozier said the rams on offer were better grown this year with the draft 10 to 15kg heavier.
“We shore them in early April so they presented with a bit more wool on them as well,” Mr Crozier said.
“We have also had 250 millimetes of rain in the last five weeks here, yet their wool was bright, white and had a nourished tip despite the rain.”
The sale was conducted by Butt Livestock and Property, Yass, with bids taken by guest auctioneer, Paul Dooley, Tamworth.
