ALL four junior ram and ewe broad ribbon winners of the inaugural 2016 Australian White National Show and Sale shown by Highveld stud, Mendooran, were all sired by the 2016 Sydney Royal Show reserve champion Myomax Gold carrier catalogued as sale Lot 1 later selling for $8000.
Four studs contested 15 show classes with 20 stud ewes and 35 stud rams judged in a unique way by two judges, James Frost, Hillden Poll Dorset stud, Crookwell, and Phillip van Schalkwyk, B&B Farms, Coonabarabran.
National Australian White Sheep Society chairman, Alan Baron, said exhibitors and spectators were very happy with the show.
“The two judge system worked fantastically well as one judge was from the terminal sire industry and the other a Dorper and Australian White seedstock breeder of self-replacing sheep representing both sides of the prime lamb industry,” he said.
“I feel a two-judge system gives people more confidence about the result.”
Mr Baron said stud breeders attending, including purchasers, indicated positively they would support the event next year.
Highveld stud sold all four senior rams after each gained class placings and kept all junior champions and reserves for showing at Sydney Royal next year.
Both judges were impressed with the junior exhibits with Mr van Schalkwyk saying the ewes exemplified the breed’s standards.
Ian and Brayden Gilmore and families’ Baringa stud, Oberon, enjoyed success especially in the ram section taking out intermediate champion and the senior and grand championships as well as both reserve champions.
Senior and grand champion ram was Baringa National, a natural (twin) son of the Myomax Gold Baringa Casper, the 2014 Adelaide Royal grand champion.
This ram was 17 months of age, a June drop from a ewe sired by a “magnificent clean skin sire”, according to Ian Gilmore.
Baringa’s intermediate champion, Baringa Grunt is by T429 and out of an “extremely good ewe”.
Baringa Grunt had earlier won the pair of rams born between August and December 2015 with his running mate, Baringa Maximum another son of Baringa Casper.
The Gilmores have held on to both reserve champion rams as stud sires.
In their first showing of the breed the Rayner family of Grathlyn stud, Hargraves, in showing three senior females took out the senior championship with a 17 month-old daughter of Baringa Casper.
In class-winner circles Kanoona Park stud of the Henry family, Curban, won ram under 20 months class and also gained other placings while Lukina stud of Luke and Tina Curry, Gulgong, gained minor placings.
