A UNIQUE device is being heralded as one of the most effective treatment options for prostate cancer, the low dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy seed, is slowly working its way into rural NSW and proving a hit.
In the mid 1900s the LDR brachytherapy seed took root in Perth and is now accessible in every part of Australia.
St George hospital surgeon, Dr Joe Bucci, said the seed has a quick recovery time and reduced side effects compared with other options.
The radioactive seed is inserted into the prostate gland, it then releases radiation directly into the tumour across a number of weeks. During that time men can resume their normal daily activities. Dr Bucci said it appeals greatly to rural men.
Dr Bucci is part of the team that established the first publicly funded brachytherapy seed program, which encourages men to look at treatments alternative to external radiation or a prostatectomy. “It’s an exciting future ahead,” he said.
St George will be the only public provider of brachytherapy seeds in NSW.
“It makes the seed even more efficient and appealing than before,” he said.
Donald Patterson, a cattle station manager, combined his brachytherapy trip to Townsville for the implementation with a “Cowboys” game and was able to return to duties on the farm the day after. Dr Bucci encouraged rural men to further explore LDR brachytherapy seeds when considering treatment options for prostate cancer.
