Colac agents sold their initial drafts of genuine autumn-drop weaner calves with great success at their monthly December sale on Friday.
Achieving prices mostly from $1200 to $1510 a head, local buyers from Western District and a single operator from South Gippsland supported the bulk of the competition, with most of the steer weaners cleared at rates from 380 to 430c/kg depending on weight.
Heavier grown and slightly older yearling-off steers were easier buying on the day, with these mostly cleared at 300- 360c/kg or $1500 to $1600 a head and a top of the market $1710 for a pen of Angus weighed at 554kg.
The market for heifers followed a similar track with heavier weights easier and the lighter younger well-bred weaners drawing strong interest from restockers still trying to restock after the extremely dry autumn when many needed to destock.
Heifers were mostly sold $1050 to $1260 with a single sale of grown heifers 461kg sold to $1360.
