Depending on where you are and your on-farm activities, recent rain was either a blessing or a curse. Delta Ag agronomist Elissa Strong, Wagga Wagga, has reported wheat crops around Harden have shot and sprung as a result of between 27 and 40 millimetres of rain last week.
“One example is what was originally a 12.9 per cent protein H2 grading is now Australian Grain Pool with a $70 per tonne penalty. This is a sad result for what was a promising crop,” Ms Strong said.
Further north-west the harvesting of chickpeas is proving tricky. “They aren’t finishing as normal due to the rain so the plants keep growing,” said Delta Ag’s Trangie store manager Bill McAnally. “However, canola which wasn’t waterlogged was excellent, with oil content between 40pc and 46pc”.
Last week’s rain included 97mm at Bukkulla near Inverell, 38mm at Burren Junction, 71mm at Merriwa, 62mm at Condobolin, 67mm at Dubbo, 60mm at Orange, 69mm at Ardlethan and Coolamon, 53mm at Grenfell and 35mm at Wagga Wagga.
