HEREFORD and Poll Hereford stud owner’s Geoff and Heather Bush, Cootamundra, attribute their success to producing good commercial cattle and ensuring a push for progress.
Running 280 cattle on their 470 hectare property, they have been participating in the Stock and Land Beef Week for than 10 years.
Their EU accredited steers, at 400 to 500 kilograms, are suited for either the domestic and export market, or depending markets at the time, they can be bought to be grain finished.
“Surplus heifers are offered each year at our annual sale and suit both stud and commercial buyers,” Mr Bush said.
“We are holding our 15th on-property sale in 2017.”
Kirraweena Hereford stud was founded by the late Fred Bush in 1953.
Commercial attributes are the top priority, originally using Cuppa sires, rich in Vern (English) blood, they produced a line of easy doing cattle of a rich ruby red colour with females having plenty of milk.
Kirraweena cattle have been exhibited at every Sydney Royal since 1955 and are the only stud to have exhibited at every Wodonga Hereford Show and Sale, since it’s inception.
Glenholme was founded by Geoff and Heather Bush in 1993, formed with cows from Strathglee, Kirraweena, Tumulla and Lylen studs, females from the Field’s Tiverton stud and Smithston have been purchased.
A Poll Hereford herd was formed in 2003.
Glenholme and Kirraweena studs are currently joining 160 females annually.
“We have been vendors and exhibitors at every Wodonga show and sale continuously since 1954,” Mr Bush said.
“Our aim is to produce good commercial cattle like my father did. We breed cattle that are capable of producing a steer 400-500kgs at 16 to 20 months of age.”
Mr Bush believes the Stock and Land Beef Week allows for new and repeat visitors to inspect their cattle on display to a detailed standard.
“We have been participating for over 10 years, and even whilst we are the most northern we have always received good support,” he said.
