Interstate visitors from Victoria, SA and WA, were among the many keen Merino breeders who took the opportunity to visit the Merino studs in the Yass, Boorowa and Harden districts in preparation for the 2017 Great Southern Stud Merino show and sale in Canberra on 21 – 23 January.
Merino studs participating included Bogo at Yass, Merryville at Boorowa, Grassy Creek at Boorowa, Koonawarra at Boorowa, Merrignee at Boorowa and Demondrille at Harden.
President of the show and sale committee George Merriman, Merryville Merino stud, Boorowa, acknowledged the keen interest shown by woolgrowers especially now with rising wool prices and strong demand for sheep.
“We draw good crowds to these field days and it is a great chance for people to have a look at the various rams displayed perhaps with the intention of buying some,” Mr Merriman said.
Local woolgrower, Scott Schlunke, “Hillgrove”, Bowning, was at the Bogo display and was interested in the rams that were displayed.
“I’ve been on Bogo blood for 15 years, but these days give me a chance to have a look at potential sires and also to enjoy the social atmosphere talking to Bogo studmaster Mal Peake and other woolgrowers,” he said.
